TRASH TELESCOPE BLUES!

"Am I doing something wrong, or is it this telescope?" The voice on the telephone was asking. "It doesn't seem to focus, and I am never sure what I am pointing at." I was speaking with another frustrated owner of a $200 Department-Store Telescope." The caller admitted that the impressive complement of accessories included with the instrument as well as the packaging embellished with color photographs of comets and nebulas had been to much to resist. But now, he was wondering whether he had made a mistake. I can't seem to keep it steady - everything's a blurr," he moaned. "The only eyepiece that seems to show anything at all is the one marked K20mm. What am I doing wrong?" "Nothing." I sighed. I had heard it all before - hundreds of times. "It's not you, its the telescope." I assured him. I went on to explain that his department-store 60mm refractor telescope is an example of what many experienced amateur astronomers uncharitably, but aptly, call "CHRISTMAS TRASHSCOPES." I told him that his frustration was perfectly normal. The classic trash scope is designed not for the ease of use, but to appeal to a well-meaning but uninformed gift buyers and rank beginners. Well-known brand names also lure the novice, but they mean nothing. Since most telescopes in this class are made in the same giant factories in the Orient regardless of whose name is on them. Even expert observers soon become frustrated trying to operate these instruments, with their jiggly mounts and rickety tripods. They barely function, usually only at their lowest power, typically about 36X with a 20mm eyepiece. Accessories such as Barlow lenses, image erectors, sun-projection screens, filter and high-power eyepieces (5mm - 12mm) supplied with these telescopes are so cheaply made that they are almost impossible to use and are included to give the impression of a fully equipped instrument. If you have a telescope like this, use it with the 15mm-25mm low-power eyepiece and the right angle prism diagonal for and introductory view of the moon, Saturn's rings,Jupiter's moons and a few double stars. Don't expect much more!!!

AND IF YOU DO NOT ALREADY OWN A TELESCOPE LIKE THIS, CONSIDER YOURSELF LUCKY TO HAVE READ THIS FIRST!
